Vasant Shinde, former Vice-Chancellor of Deccan College, emphasises that a clear reading of the Rigveda is essential to understand cultural patterns seen in sites like <strong data-start=\"894\" data-end=\"944\">Rakhigarhi, Banawali, Kalibangan and Dholavira<\/strong>. This approach aims to bring literary and material evidence into one coherent framework\u2014important for both <strong data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1077\">Anthropology Optional<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1106\">GS-I Ancient History<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1514\"><strong data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1152\">Are Harappan and Vedic People the Same?<\/strong><br data-start=\"1152\" data-end=\"1155\">Shinde highlights an ongoing hypothesis:<br data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1198\"><strong data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1270\">Harappan and Vedic people may represent the same cultural continuum.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1270\" data-end=\"1273\">He cites the discovery of <strong data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1361\">Vedic-style fire altars and ritual platforms in Rakhigarhi<\/strong>, which resemble descriptions found in the Rigveda. These findings challenge the older view that Harappan and Vedic cultures were separate and unrelated.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1516\" data-end=\"1928\"><strong data-start=\"1516\" data-end=\"1559\">Saraswati River and Settlement Patterns<\/strong><br data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1562\">Shinde draws attention to a striking correlation:<br data-start=\"1611\" data-end=\"1614\">Nearly <strong data-start=\"1621\" data-end=\"1670\">two-thirds of Harappan sites (at least 1,200)<\/strong> are located along the <strong data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"1719\">Saraswati river system<\/strong>, a river mentioned <strong data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1766\">71 times in the Rigveda<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"1767\" data-end=\"1770\">This strengthens the argument that the text may have been composed in regions inhabited by Harappan communities, especially during the Mature Harappan period.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1930\" data-end=\"2196\"><strong data-start=\"1930\" data-end=\"1952\">Dating the Rigveda<\/strong><br data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"1955\">Based on archaeological layers and cultural markers, Shinde proposes that the <strong data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2088\">Rigveda could be at least 4,500 years old, or older<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2092\">This timeline supports the idea that parts of the Vedic corpus may overlap with the late Harappan phase.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2627\"><strong data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2242\">Genetic Evidence and Cultural Continuity<\/strong><br data-start=\"2242\" data-end=\"2245\">Shinde\u2019s research group reported <strong data-start=\"2278\" data-end=\"2378\">genetic similarities between present-day Indian women and the skeletal remains of Harappan women<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"2379\" data-end=\"2382\">For Anthropology Optional, this point directly connects to debates on <strong data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2491\">population continuity vs. migration<\/strong>, a recurring UPSC theme.
