In northern Spain, cave paintings pre-date the arrival of modern humans, pointing to Neanderthals as the artists. In Indonesia, comparably ancient art was instead made by early <em>Homo sapiens<\/em>. These are two separate strands of evidence \u2014 not one \u2014 and together they force anthropologists to ask whether symbolic expression was ever unique to our species. Because the art predates <em>Homo sapiens<\/em> locally, the most likely creators were <strong>Neanderthals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Early Homo sapiens art in Southeast Asia<\/h2>\n<p>Indonesia has produced some of the oldest art anywhere \u2014 made not by Neanderthals but by early <em>Homo sapiens<\/em>. A 2024 study in <em>Nature<\/em> dated a narrative hunting scene at Leang Karampuang, <strong>Sulawesi<\/strong>, to at least <strong>51,200 years ago<\/strong> \u2014 the oldest known figurative and narrative art. A 2026 <em>Nature<\/em> study went further, placing a hand stencil on nearby Muna Island at a minimum of about <strong>67,800 years ago<\/strong>. This evidence shows that complex, narrative symbolic behaviour arose early among modern humans in Southeast Asia \u2014 a separate lineage and story from the Iberian (Neanderthal) evidence.<\/p>\n<h2>Sophisticated murals and symbolic imagery<\/h2>\n<p>Cave murals in Spain and Indonesia depict a range of scenes and symbols:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hunting scenes<\/li>\n<li>Animal interactions<\/li>\n<li>Abstract symbols and patterns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some images may even represent lunar cycles or constellations, hinting that prehistoric populations observed and interpreted celestial patterns.<\/p>\n<h2>Ochre artefacts from Africa<\/h2>\n<p>At <strong>Blombos Cave, South Africa<\/strong>, engraved ochre artefacts over <strong>70,000 years old<\/strong> show deliberate engraving and pigment use \u2014 evidence of advanced cognition long before the Upper Palaeolithic.<\/p>\n<h2>Neanderthals as artists<\/h2>\n<p>The art at <strong>La Pasiega<\/strong> and other northern Spanish caves includes red disks, ladder-like shapes and hand stencils. Their age points to Neanderthals as the makers \u2014 directly challenging the older view that Neanderthals lacked symbolic ability.
