Excavations at Oued Beht on Morocco&#8217;s Zemmour plateau now describe a large farming community there from about 3400 to 2900 BC. For Optional Paper I, it is a recent case that moves the Neolithic debate beyond the Near East and Europe.<\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Broodbank, Bokbot, Lucarini et al., Antiquity (2024), DOI 10.15184\/aqy.2024.101; University of Cambridge news release; Antiquity Prize 2025 citation.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What was found<\/h2>\n<p>First, the authors report pottery, stone tools and large numbers of pits. Moreover, they read the pits as storage features of a sedentary or semi-sedentary farming community. They describe it as the earliest and largest known agricultural complex in Africa beyond the Nile corridor. However, note the wording &#8220;known&#8221; and &#8220;beyond the Nile&#8221;: it is a claim about what has been found so far, not a claim about all of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the community sits at the Neolithic to Copper Age transition, so older coverage that calls it simply Neolithic is a simplification. The paper&#8217;s own keywords use &#8220;Neolithic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>A gap in the record<\/h2>\n<p>The Maghreb between roughly 4000 and 1000 BC is poorly known, even though this was a period of spreading farming, growing trade and increasing social complexity around the Mediterranean. Oued Beht fills part of that gap. It therefore shows that north-west Africa took an active part in western Mediterranean developments instead of waiting at the edge.<\/p>\n<h2>The Iberian link<\/h2>\n<p>Ivory and ostrich eggshell found in Iberian sites had long hinted at contact across the Strait of Gibraltar. In addition, pit structures at Oued Beht resemble those at contemporary sites in Iberia, which strengthens the case for regular exchange in the fourth millennium BC. Treat this as a case for interaction, not for a proven direction of influence: the authors speak of a dialogue between the two shores.<\/p>\n<h2>Using it in UPSC Mains<\/h2>\n<p>Use Oued Beht to show regional diversity in Neolithic development and to challenge Eurocentric models. A good answer keeps the standard sequence and then adds Morocco as a recent example. For example, it can also support points on trade networks, surplus storage and the social complexity that follows farming.
