Syeda et al., Science Advances (14 May 2025).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Early human hand evolution<\/strong> was not a simple journey from &#8220;ape hand&#8221; to &#8220;tool-making hand.&#8221; A 2025 study shows that some early hominins had hands built for <strong>both climbing and manipulation<\/strong> at the same time. For UPSC Anthropology Paper 1, it is a clear example of the locomotion\u2013manipulation trade-off in human evolution.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f4f6fb;border-left:4px solid #1f3a5f;padding:16px 20px;margin:22px 0;border-radius:6px;\">\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 8px;\"><strong>Why this matters:<\/strong> it shows early hominin hands combining climbing and precise manipulation, rather than one replacing the other in a straight line.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0 0 8px;\"><strong>Syllabus relevance:<\/strong> Anthropology Paper 1 \u2014 human evolution, locomotion and the evolution of the hand and tool use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin:0;\"><strong>Best use in answers:<\/strong> use it to argue for mosaic evolution and a trade-off between arboreal locomotion and manipulation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What the study looked at<\/h2>\n<p>In addition, researchers used <strong>3D scanning<\/strong> to measure the internal (cortical) bone thickness of fossil <strong>finger bones<\/strong>. Bone remodels according to how it is used, so its internal structure records habitual behaviour. Moreover, the fossils studied were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Australopithecus sediba<\/em> \u2014 about 2 million years ago, South Africa.<\/li>\n<li><em>Homo naledi<\/em> \u2014 about 300,000 years ago, South Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The findings: a dual-use hand<\/h2>\n<p>Furthermore, both species appear to have used their hands in <strong>two ways<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For <strong>climbing and grasping<\/strong> branches or rock \u2014 an arboreal, weight-bearing use.<\/li>\n<li>For <strong>manipulating objects<\/strong> with some precision \u2014 a step towards tool use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In particular, they were likely capable <strong>bipedal walkers<\/strong> that also still spent time climbing. In other words, the hand was a compromise between competing demands.<\/p>\n<h2>Why this matters: a trade-off, not a straight line<\/h2>\n<p>Similarly, this complicates the simple story of hands evolving purely &#8220;for tools.&#8221; Instead, early hominins retained a <strong>locomotion\u2013manipulation trade-off<\/strong>: hands strong enough for climbing yet dexterous enough for handling objects.
