Urbanization and tribal institutions

Model Answer

VAID ICS

Approach

  • Demand of Question: Explain how urbanization influences traditional tribal institutions and assess both transformation and continuity in tribal social organization.
  • Structuring the Response: Define urbanization in the tribal context, examine its impact on kinship, economy, political organization, religion and identity, and conclude with the coexistence of institutional change and adaptation.
  • Key Dimensions to Cover: Migration, detribalization, kinship networks, tribal associations, occupational mobility, urban ethnicity, social capital and cultural continuity.

Model Answer

Introduction

Urbanization exposes tribal populations to wage labour, markets, formal education, bureaucracy and heterogeneous social environments. It does not necessarily destroy tribal institutions; rather, many are reorganized to function within new urban settings.

Impact on tribal institutions

  1. Kinship: Residential dispersal weakens the territorial basis of clans and extended families, but kin networks continue to provide employment, housing and mutual support to migrants.
  2. Economy: Subsistence-oriented occupations increasingly give way to wage labour, salaried employment and informal-sector work, reducing dependence on traditional reciprocal exchange.
  3. Political organization: Traditional councils may lose some regulatory authority, while tribal associations, unions and student organizations emerge as new institutions of collective representation.
  4. Marriage: Urban education and occupational mobility may increase inter-group interaction, though community endogamy often remains resilient.
  5. Religion and ritual: Elaborate village rituals may decline or be simplified, while festivals are recreated in urban associations as markers of ethnic identity.
  6. Identity: Urbanization may paradoxically strengthen ethnicity as dispersed migrants organize around a common tribal identity.

Conclusion

Urbanization produces not simple detribalization, but a restructuring of tribal institutions in which kinship, ritual and identity adapt to new economic and political environments.
