Introduction
Ramapithecus was named by G.E. Lewis in 1934 on the basis of fragmentary Miocene hominoid remains recovered from the Siwalik deposits of the Indian subcontinent. Certain apparently human-like dental and jaw characteristics initially led palaeoanthropologists to consider it a possible early hominin.
Morphological features
Most remains attributed to Ramapithecus consisted of maxillary and mandibular fragments with teeth.
Its important features included:
- Thick molar enamel: Molars possessed relatively thick enamel, suggesting adaptation to relatively hard or abrasive foods.
- Broad molars: The cheek teeth were broad and suited to heavy mastication.
- Reduced canines: Canines appeared relatively reduced compared with those of many living apes.
- Reduced honing complex: The canine-premolar honing mechanism appeared less developed.
- Jaw morphology: Early reconstructions suggested a relatively short and broad face and jaw.
- Dental arcade: Fragmentary material was initially reconstructed as possessing a comparatively parabolic dental arcade, considered more hominin-like than the U-shaped arcade of many apes.
Initial phylogenetic interpretation
During the 1960s, Elwyn Simons and David Pilbeam emphasized these dental characteristics and considered Ramapithecus close to the origin of the human lineage.
The earlier interpretation was:
Ramapithecus → Early Hominins → Australopithecus → Homo
Its thick enamel, reduced canines and reconstructed dental arcade appeared to support this position.
Revision through Sivapithecus
The discovery of more complete fossils of the closely related Sivapithecus, particularly facial remains, changed this interpretation.
Sivapithecus showed:
- narrow interorbital region;
- distinctive orbital morphology;
- facial architecture resembling the modern orangutan.
These features demonstrated stronger affinity with the Asian pongine lineage than with hominins.
Many specimens once separately classified as Ramapithecus are therefore now included within, or regarded as closely related to, Sivapithecus.
Present phylogenetic position
The broad modern interpretation is:
Hominoidea → Sivapithecus/Ramapithecus complex → Ponginae → Orangutan lineage
Thus, Ramapithecus is no longer regarded as a direct human ancestor.
Conclusion
Although Ramapithecus was once considered a probable early hominin, more complete Sivapithecus fossils established its closer affinity with the orangutan-related pongine lineage, making it a classic case of revision in palaeoanthropological interpretation.
