Biological anthropology had scientific roots in Darwinian evolution, anatomy and fossil studies, but its agenda became more rigorously scientific after the mid-twentieth century. This transformation is often called the rise of the “New Physical Anthropology,” associated especially with Sherwood Washburn’s 1951 call to move beyond racial typology.
Shift from race typology to population thinking
Earlier physical anthropology often classified humans into fixed racial types using skull measurements and external traits. After the modern synthesis, population genetics replaced typology with allele frequencies, variation, adaptation and gene flow.
Evolutionary and genetic framework
Mendelian genetics, Darwinian selection, mutation, drift and gene flow became central. Studies of blood groups, haemoglobin variants, HLA, DNA and later genomics made human variation measurable and evolutionary.
Primatology and behaviour
Studies by Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Sherwood Washburn and others linked primate behaviour, locomotion and sociality with human evolution. This made primate studies central to hominisation.
Palaeoanthropology became more empirical
Radiometric dating, stratigraphy, taphonomy, CT scanning and comparative anatomy improved fossil interpretation. The Leakey discoveries and later East African finds placed human evolution in a firmer chronological framework.
Growth, adaptation and biocultural studies
Human growth, nutrition, high-altitude adaptation, disease ecology and stress studies made biological anthropology more experimental, statistical and applied.
Critical balance
The change did not mean that earlier anthropology was wholly unscientific. Rather, mid-twentieth-century biological anthropology became more hypothesis-driven, evolutionary, quantitative and ethically aware.
Conclusion
From racial classification, biological anthropology moved toward evolutionary population science and biocultural explanation. This made the discipline both more scientific and more humane.
