Genealogical method is a field technique used to collect and analyse information about family relationships across generations. It was systematically developed in anthropology by W.H.R. Rivers during the Torres Strait Expedition. In biological anthropology, it is used not merely to prepare family trees, but to study heredity, inheritance patterns, consanguinity, genetic diseases, population structure and genetic counselling.
Meaning
Genealogical method involves preparing a pedigree or family chart by recording relationships such as parent-child, siblings, spouses, births, deaths, marriages and descent across generations. It helps the anthropologist understand how biological traits and genetic disorders are transmitted within families and populations.
Procedure
First, the researcher selects an individual or family as the starting point. Then information is collected about parents, grandparents, siblings, children, marriage partners, deceased relatives, miscarriages, infant deaths, consanguineous marriages and affected members. The data is cross-checked with multiple informants to reduce errors. In fieldwork, local events, rituals, naming practices and oral histories may help in reconstructing older generations. The information is then represented through a pedigree chart using standard symbols for male, female, marriage, descent, affected person, carrier, death, twins and consanguineous marriage. Finally, the pedigree is analysed to identify the mode of inheritance and population patterns.
Use in Biological Anthropology
Study of heredity
It helps trace the transmission of physical and genetic traits such as blood groups, colour blindness, baldness, stature, skin colour, dermatoglyphic traits and other hereditary characters.
Study of genetic disorders
Genealogical method helps identify whether a disorder follows autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked or mitochondrial inheritance. For example, haemophilia is usually X-linked, while sickle-cell anaemia and thalassaemia are commonly autosomal recessive.
Study of consanguinity
It is useful in studying cousin marriage and close-kin marriage. Such unions may increase the expression of harmful recessive genes. This is important in India because many caste, tribal and regional groups follow endogamy or consanguineous marriage practices.
Genetic counselling
Pedigree analysis forms the foundation of genetic counselling. It helps identify carriers, estimate recurrence risk and guide reproductive decisions. For example, if both parents are carriers of an autosomal recessive disorder, the risk of an affected child is 25% in each pregnancy.
Population genetics
Genealogical method helps study endogamy, exogamy, gene flow, genetic drift, founder effect and population isolates. In India, it is useful for studying caste groups, tribes and isolated populations where marriage rules influence genetic structure.
Medical anthropology
It helps in studying the distribution of hereditary diseases, congenital anomalies and chronic conditions within families and communities. It also links biological inheritance with social practices such as lineage, caste endogamy, clan exogamy and marriage rules.
Anthropological Value
Although mainly used in biological anthropology for heredity and genetic analysis, genealogical method also provides insight into kinship, descent, inheritance, status, marriage patterns and transmission of traditional knowledge. Thus, it connects biological inheritance with cultural and social organisation.
Advantages
Limitations
It is simple, inexpensive and useful in field conditions. It depends on memory and honesty of informants, so errors may occur. It provides information about both biological and social relationships. Adoption, illegitimacy, remarriage or hidden paternity may affect accuracy. It is useful for studying small populations, tribes, caste groups and isolated communities. It may not identify gene mutation directly unless combined with laboratory tests. It helps link biological inheritance with social practices such as endogamy, exogamy, clan rules and consanguineous marriage. In complex urban societies, tracing long genealogies may be difficult.
Conclusion
Genealogical method is an important bridge between field anthropology and human genetics. In biological anthropology, it helps in studying heredity, genetic disorders, consanguinity, population structure and genetic counselling. However, for greater accuracy, it should be combined with clinical examination, blood group studies, DNA analysis and other genetic methods.
