Anthropology contributes to equipment design by translating human biological variation into ergonomic specifications. The relevant branch is design anthropometry: the systematic use of body dimensions, proportions, strength, posture and movement so that equipment fits the intended user population rather than an abstract “average person.”

The process begins with defining the user group by sex, age, occupation and population background, followed by standardised static and dynamic measurements. Designers use percentile values rather than only means: for clearance, a high percentile may be required; for reach, a lower percentile protects smaller users. Functional dimensions measured in realistic postures are often more useful than standing anthropometry.
In defence, such data guide helmets, body armour, respirators, uniforms, boots, backpacks, weapon grips, vehicle seats, cockpit controls and workstation layout. Poor fit can reduce visibility, mobility and endurance, increase fatigue and musculoskeletal injury, and compromise safety. Equipment must therefore integrate anthropometry with biomechanics, range of motion, load carriage, thermal stress and protective requirements.
Applied physical anthropology also supports population-specific databases. A design based on foreign military samples may fail when body proportions differ in the actual user population. Modern 3-D body scanning improves capture of shape and fit beyond traditional linear measurements.
The anthropologist works with engineers and users in an iterative cycle: measure variation → establish design limits → prototype → test under task conditions → redesign.
