Introduction Personal identification is the process of establishing the exact identity of an individual (living or deceased) based on unique biological, morphological, or behavioral characteristics. In forensic anthropology and criminology, it is the cornerstone of converting biological traces into admissible investigative evidence.

  • Morphological and Biometric Methods:
    • Anthropometry: Pioneered by Alphonse Bertillon (Bertillonage, 1879), it used standardized body measurements (e.g., head length, middle finger length) and identifying marks (scars, tattoos). Mostly replaced today, but stature remains a key exclusionary metric.
    • Dermatoglyphics (Fingerprints): Systematized by Francis Galton. The friction ridge patterns (loops, whorls, arches) and minutiae on fingertips are highly individual and remain unchanged throughout life.
    • Modern Biometrics: Iris scans, facial recognition algorithms, and voice profiling.
  • Osteological (Skeletal) Methods:
    • Used when remains are skeletonized, decomposed, or mutilated. Forensic anthropologists estimate the "Biological Profile":
      • Sex: Pelvis (sciatic notch) and skull morphology.
      • Age: Dental eruption, epiphyseal fusion, and pubic symphysis wear.
      • Stature: Measuring long bones (femur, tibia) using regression equations.
      • Ancestry: Cranial indices and nasal bone structure.
  • Forensic Odontology (Dental):

  • Probabilistic, Not Absolute: With the exception of STR-DNA and pristine fingerprints, forensic identification is probabilistic. Skeletal age and stature provide ranges, not exact numbers.
  • Cognitive Bias & Error: Fingerprint matching relies on human examiners and can be subjective. Poor-quality or partial prints can lead to false positives.
  • Contamination and Chain of Custody: DNA is highly sensitive. Secondary transfer (e.g., Suspect A touches an object, Person B touches it and leaves it at a crime scene) or lab contamination can falsely implicate individuals. Rigid chain-of-custody protocols are mandatory.
  • Ethical Concerns: Facial recognition algorithms suffer from demographic biases (higher error rates for minorities). Mass DNA databases raise deep privacy and consent issues.
