Introduction: The discovery and increasing use of iron metallurgy represented an important technological transformation because iron ore was widely available and could be fashioned into durable agricultural implements, tools and weapons. Its social consequences extended far beyond metallurgy itself.

  1. Agricultural expansion

Iron implements such as:

  • ploughshares;
  • axes;
  • sickles;
  • hoes

improved the ability to clear vegetation and cultivate land.

This was particularly significant in heavily forested regions.

Thus:
