Introduction: Radiocarbon or Carbon-14 dating is an absolute dating technique developed by Willard F. Libby for determining the age of organic archaeological materials. It is based on the predictable radioactive decay of ¹C after the death of an organism.

Principle of C-14 formation

Cosmic rays entering the atmosphere generate neutrons. These react with atmospheric nitrogen:

¹N + neutron ¹C + proton

Radioactive ¹C combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and enters:

Atmosphere → Plants → Animals → Food chain

While an organism is alive, exchange with the environment maintains an approximately predictable relationship between radioactive and stable carbon.

What happens after death?

At death:

Carbon exchange stops

The existing ¹⁴C begins to decay through beta emission back to nitrogen:

¹C ¹N + β

The half-life of ¹⁴C is approximately 5,730 years.

Therefore:

More remaining C-14 → Younger sample
Less remaining C-14 → Older sample

Materials that can be dated

Radiocarbon dating can be applied to organic materials such as:

  • charcoal;
  • wood;
  • seeds;
  • bone collagen;
  • textiles;
  • shell, with caution.

AMS dating

Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) measures C-14 atoms directly and allows dating from very small samples.

Advantages include:

  • smaller sample requirement;
  • improved precision;
  • possibility of analysing rare archaeological materials.

Calibration

Atmospheric C-14 concentration has varied through time.

Therefore radiocarbon ages must be calibrated using independent records such as:

  • tree rings;
  • corals;
  • other securely dated sequences.

Thus:

Measured radiocarbon age → Calibration → Calendar-age estimate

Limitations

  1. Limited dating range: Beyond approximately 45,000–50,000 years, so little C-14 remains that reliable measurement becomes difficult.
  2. Only carbon-bearing material: Stone and metal cannot be dated directly.
  3. Contamination: Younger or older carbon entering the sample may significantly alter the result.
  4. Reservoir effect: Marine and freshwater organisms may appear artificially old because the carbon they absorb does not have the same C-14 concentration as the contemporary atmosphere.
  5. Atmospheric variation: Changes in atmospheric C-14 require calibration.
  6. Old-wood effect: Charcoal may date the growth of an old tree rather than the archaeological event in which the wood was burned.
  7. Contextual association: Dating charcoal found near an artefact does not automatically date the artefact unless their archaeological association is secure.

Conclusion

Radiocarbon dating revolutionized archaeology by providing a numerical chronology for organic remains through the predictable decay of Carbon-14. Its accuracy, however, depends upon secure context, uncontaminated samples, calibration and awareness of reservoir effects and chronological limits.
