Introduction: The Narmada Basin of central India is one of the most important palaeoanthropological regions of South Asia. Its significance increased greatly with the discovery of a hominin cranial fossil from Hathnora on the banks of the Narmada.

The Hathnora discovery

In 1982, geologist Arun Sonakia reported a partial hominin cranium from Hathnora, Madhya Pradesh.

The specimen consists primarily of a robust portion of the cranial vault and is generally assigned to the Middle Pleistocene, although its precise age and taxonomic position remain debated.

It has variously been attributed to:

  • Homo erectus;
  • archaic Homo sapiens;
  • Homo heidelbergensis-like populations.

This uncertainty itself reflects its mosaic morphology.

Morphological significance

The fossil shows a combination of:

  • thick cranial bones;
  • robust cranial architecture;
  • relatively large estimated cranial capacity;
  • features more derived than some classical Asian Homo erectus specimens.
