Introduction Dating methods are scientific techniques used by archaeologists and paleoanthropologists to determine the age of artifacts, fossils, and geological strata. They are broadly classified into two categories: Relative dating (which establishes a sequence of events—older vs. younger) and Absolute (Chronometric) dating (which provides a numerical age estimate in calendar years).

  1. Relative Method: Stratigraphy
  • Principle: Based on geology's Law of Superposition, which states that in an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks or soil, the lower layers (strata) are older than the upper layers.
  • Procedure: Archaeologists carefully excavate site profiles, recording the color, texture, and content of each layer. If Artifact A is found in a stratum below Artifact B, Artifact A is relatively older. The Law of Cross-Cutting Relationships is also used (e.g., a pit dug into a layer is younger than the layer it cuts).
  • Application: It is the fundamental baseline for all archaeological excavation, providing the essential context (association) of artifacts.
  • Limitations: It does not provide an exact age in years. Furthermore, the sequence can be disrupted by natural forces (earthquakes, burrowing animals/bioturbation) or human activity (digging wells, plowing), creating "reverse stratigraphy."
  1. Absolute Method: Radiocarbon (C-14) Dating
  • Principle: Developed by Willard Libby in 1949, it relies on the radioactive decay of the Carbon-14 isotope. While alive, organisms absorb C-14 and stable C-12 in a constant ratio from the atmosphere. Upon death, C-14 absorption stops, and the existing C-14 begins to decay into Nitrogen-14 at a known, constant rate (half-life of 5,730 years).
  • Procedure: By measuring the ratio of remaining C-14 to stable C-12 in an organic sample, scientists can calculate the time elapsed since the organism died. Modern techniques use Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), which counts individual atoms, requiring only minute sample sizes.
  • Calibration: Because atmospheric C-14 levels have fluctuated historically due to solar activity and Earth's magnetic field, raw "radiocarbon years" must be calibrated against independent records (like Dendrochronology/tree-rings) to yield accurate calendar years.
  • Application: Highly accurate for dating organic materials (bone collagen, wood, charcoal, seeds, shell).
  • Limitations: It can only date organic material (not stone tools). Its effective upper limit is about 50,000 years, making it useless for older hominin fossils (which require Potassium-Argon dating). It is also highly susceptible to modern carbon contamination.

Conclusion The most robust archaeological chronologies do not rely on a single method. They combine the contextual sequence provided by relative methods like stratigraphy with the numerical precision of absolute methods like Radiocarbon dating to build a highly accurate timeline of the human past.
