Introduction: Sivapithecus is an extinct Miocene hominoid known mainly from the Siwalik deposits of the Indian subcontinent. Fossils broadly dating to about 12–8 million years ago are important because their facial morphology shows strong affinity with the modern orangutan (Pongo) lineage.
Discovery and distribution
The genus Sivapithecus was named by Guy Ellcock Pilgrim in 1910.
Fossils have been recovered principally from Siwalik formations of the northwestern subcontinent.
Cranial and facial features
The most diagnostic characteristics include:
- relatively narrow interorbital region;
- tall and narrow nasal aperture;
- concave or “dished” mid-face;
- projecting premaxillary region;
- morphology around the orbit resembling orangutans.
The face shows a striking mosaic of features close to Pongo.

Postcranial features
The postcranial skeleton does not show the full set of suspensory specializations characteristic of modern orangutans.

- arboreal climbing;
- quadrupedal locomotion;

Brain and overall body form
Brain size remained ape-like and much smaller than later hominins.
