The Lower Palaeolithic of India is represented by two broad stone-tool traditions:
- the Soanian pebble-tool tradition, comparable in technology to the Oldowan or Mode I tradition; and
- the Acheulian handaxe–cleaver tradition, also called Mode II.
The Oldowan is securely known from Africa from about 2.5 million years ago. In India, however, simple pebble and flake industries are better described as Oldowan-like or Soanian, because their chronology and cultural identity remain debated.
Oldowan-like or Soanian Tradition
The Soanian tradition was identified by H. de Terra and T. T. Paterson in 1939 in the Soan Valley, now in Pakistan. They proposed Pre-Soan, Early Soan, Late Soan and Evolved Soan stages.
Main characteristics
- Pebbles and cobbles were used as raw material.
- Flakes were removed from one surface to form choppers or from both surfaces to form chopping tools.
- Other implements included simple flakes, scrapers, cores and hammerstones.
- Tools were generally thick, irregular and only partly shaped.
- Hard-hammer percussion was the main manufacturing technique.
Indian distribution
Comparable pebble-tool assemblages are reported from:
- Sirsa and Ghaggar valleys, Haryana;
- Beas and Banganga valleys, Himachal Pradesh;
- Hoshiarpur–Chandigarh sector of the Siwalik foothills;
- Nittur in Karnataka and Mahadeo Piparia in Madhya Pradesh.
Claims of Mahadevian and Durkadian pebble-tool industries in the Narmada Valley require further confirmation.
Critical issue
Robin Dennell’s investigations questioned de Terra and Paterson’s terrace chronology. Some Soanian assemblages may also belong to the Middle Palaeolithic. Therefore, simple pebble tools should not automatically be labelled Indian Oldowan.

Acheulian Tradition
The Acheulian is the best-documented Lower Palaeolithic tradition in India. Robert Bruce Foote’s discovery of a handaxe at Pallavaram in 1863 laid the foundation of Indian prehistory. It was earlier known as the Madrasian tradition.
Tool types and technology
- bifacial handaxes;
- cleavers with broad transverse edges;
- picks, knives and chopping tools;
- scrapers, points and flakes.
Large flakes, cobbles or blocks were shaped by repeated removal of flakes. Acheulian tools show greater planning, bifacial working and control over shape than the Soanian tools.
Early Acheulian
Early tools were generally:
- thick and heavy;
- irregular in cross-section;
- marked by uneven edges and remaining cortex;
- made mainly by hard-hammer technique.
Important sites include Singi Talav and Didwana, Chirki-Nevasa, Morgaon, Attirampakkam, Hunsgi and Isampur.
Late Acheulian
Later assemblages show:
- thinner and more symmetrical handaxes;
- straighter and carefully finished edges;
- smaller bifaces;
- increased use of scrapers, points and other flake tools.
These developments prepared the ground for the later Middle Palaeolithic flake tradition.
Major sites and settlement evidence
- Attirampakkam, Tamil Nadu: in-situ quartzite Acheulian tools and animal fossils; dated to around 1.5 million years.
- Isampur, Karnataka: quarry-cum-workshop with limestone tools, unfinished pieces, flakes and chipping clusters.
- Hunsgi–Baichbal valleys: numerous habitation, quarry and activity sites.
- Bhimbetka, Madhya Pradesh: long cultural sequence in rock-shelter and open-air settings.
- Other important regions include the Narmada–Son valleys, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhota Nagpur and the Kortallayar Valley.

Anthropological Significance
The traditions reveal a change from expedient pebble tools to planned and repeatedly shaped bifaces. Acheulian technology indicates:
- improved hand–eye coordination and forward planning;
- knowledge of stone quality and raw-material sources;
- transmission of tool-making skills through social learning;
- occupation of river valleys, plateaus and varied ecological zones;
- organised hunting, scavenging and plant-food collection.
However, this was not a simple linear replacement. Pebble tools and bifaces sometimes occurred in the same region, suggesting functional and ecological variation rather than necessarily separate human populations.
Conclusion
The Soanian represents India’s main pebble-based Lower Palaeolithic tradition, though its identification with the African Oldowan remains uncertain. The Acheulian, in contrast, is widespread, securely documented and technologically more standardised. Together, they illustrate the growing adaptive ability, planning and socially transmitted technical knowledge of early hominins in the Indian subcontinent.
