Introduction Fission track dating is an absolute (radiometric) dating technique developed in the 1960s. It measures the microscopic damage trails left in minerals and natural glasses by the spontaneous fission of Uranium-238 .It is highly valuable in paleoanthropology for dating contexts ranging from 100,000 years to several million years ago, effectively covering the span of human evolution.

  1. Principle and Methodology
  • The Mechanism: Uranium-238 (²³⁸U) undergoes spontaneous fission at a known, constant rate. When the nucleus splits, the highly energetic fragments recoil, plowing through the crystal lattice of the host material (like zircon, apatite, or obsidian glass) and leaving microscopic damage trails called "fission tracks."
  • The Process: The sample is polished and treated with an acid/chemical etchant to enlarge the tracks making them visible under an optical microscope.
  • Calculating Age: The age is determined by comparing the density of naturally occurring fossil tracks (which indicates time passed) with the total uranium content in the sample (determined by artificially inducing fission in a nuclear reactor).
  1. Applications in Anthropology and Archaeology
  • Dating Hominin Fossil Sites: It is extensively used to date volcanic ash layers (tuffs) situated above or below hominin fossils, especially in the East African Rift Valley.
  • Cross-Verifying K-Ar Dates (The KBS Tuff Controversy): Fission track dating was famously used to resolve the chronological debate over the KBS Tuff at Koobi Fora (Lake Turkana). It helped correctly date Richard Leakey’s famous Homo rudolfensis skull (KNM-ER 1470) to around 1.9 million years ago, correcting earlier erroneous Potassium-Argon dates.
  • Olduvai Gorge: Used to corroborate the dating of Bed I at Olduvai Gorge, establishing firm timelines for Homo habilis and Zinjanthropus (Paranthropus boisei).
  • Dating Obsidian Artifacts: Prehistoric tools made of obsidian (volcanic glass) can be dated. If early humans dropped an obsidian tool into a hearth fire, the heat resets the "track clock" to zero, allowing archaeologists to date the exact moment of human use.
  1. Limitations
  • Thermal Annealing: High temperatures can "heal" or erase the tracks in the crystal lattice. If a rock was naturally reheated by geological processes, the method will yield a falsely young age (though, as noted above, this can be advantageous for dating intentional human fires).
  • Material Dependence: It can only be applied to materials containing measurable amounts of Uranium.
