Introduction: Human evolution is neither purely biological nor purely cultural. It is a biocultural process in which anatomical and genetic changes created capacities for culture, while cultural innovations subsequently altered the selective environment of humans.
Biological factors
- Bipedalism: Habitual upright locomotion freed the hands from locomotion.
Bipedalism → Free hands → Carrying and manipulation
It also involved modifications in the pelvis, spine, femur and foot.
- Development of the hand: An opposable thumb, precision grip and refined hand-eye coordination enhanced tool manufacture and manipulation.
- Encephalization: Enlargement and reorganization of the brain increased capacities for:

- planning;
- learning;
- problem-solving;
- symbolic behaviour.
- Changes in dentition and face: Reduction of canines, jaws and teeth accompanied dietary and technological changes.
