Introduction
“Rhodesian Man” refers principally to the Kabwe 1 (Broken Hill) cranium discovered in 1921 at Kabwe, present-day Zambia, and originally named Homo rhodesiensis by Arthur Smith Woodward.
Body
The specimen is a robust Middle Pleistocene hominin. It has a low enlarged cranial vault, massive continuous brow ridges, a broad face, large nasal region, thick cranial bones and an occipital torus. Its cranial capacity is about 1,300 cc, approaching the modern human range. The face is less prognathic than Homo erectus, while the skull retains several archaic features. Dental pathology is marked, including numerous carious lesions.
Modern dating places Kabwe at roughly 324,000–274,000 years ago. Its taxonomic position remains debated. The Smithsonian Human Origins Program commonly places it within Homo heidelbergensis; some researchers retain H. rhodesiensis for African Middle Pleistocene fossils.
Conclusion
Its importance lies in this mosaic anatomy. Kabwe illustrates the diversity of Middle Pleistocene Homo and cautions against older linear evolutionary schemes. It is best treated as an archaic African Homo population close to the evolutionary background of later Homo sapiens, not as a fixed racial type.
