Introduction: Culture is not produced by any single biological trait. Human capacity for culture emerged through a long evolutionary interaction among bipedalism, manipulative hands, enlarged and reorganized brain, language, prolonged childhood and intensified social learning.

  1. Bipedalism and erect posture

Habitual bipedalism freed the forelimbs from locomotion.

This permitted:

  • carrying food and infants;
  • manipulation of objects;
  • manufacture and transport of tools.

Thus:

Bipedalism → Free hands → Greater manipulation → Technological potential

The evolution of bipedalism therefore created an important anatomical precondition for material culture.
