Introduction: Adaptive radiation refers to the evolutionary diversification of a common ancestral stock into multiple forms adapted to different ecological niches. Primates provide a major example, having diversified in relation to habitat, diet, locomotion and social behaviour.

Major adaptive directions:

  1. Arboreal insectivory/frugivory: Early primates developed grasping extremities, nails, enhanced vision and flexible limbs for life in trees.
  2. Vertical clinging and leaping: Seen in tarsiers and many lemurs, involving powerful hind limbs and elongated tarsal elements.
  3. Arboreal quadrupedalism: Common among several monkeys such as capuchins and guenons.
  4. Terrestrial quadrupedalism: Baboons and patas monkeys show adaptations to extensive ground locomotion.
  5. Suspensory locomotion: Gibbons evolved brachiation, while orangutans use quadrumanous climbing.
  6. Knuckle-walking: Chimpanzees and gorillas combine terrestrial locomotion with retained climbing adaptations.

Dietary radiation also produced folivorous, frugivorous, insectivorous and omnivorous specializations.

Thus:

Common primate ancestry → Ecological opportunity → Different niches → Adaptive diversification

Conclusion: Primate adaptive radiation demonstrates how ecological pressures and behavioural flexibility generated the remarkable anatomical and locomotor diversity seen among living and fossil primates.
