Chronometric Dating — 2024 Paper I

Question · 2024 · Paper I · 10 Marks

Chronometric dating

Model Answer

VAID ICS

Introduction

Chronometric dating, often called absolute dating, refers to scientific methods that assign a numerical age or age range to an archaeological object, fossil or deposit. The term chronometric is preferable because the resulting date is an estimate with a margin of error rather than an exact age. Dates are often expressed as BP (Before Present), with 1950 CE taken as the conventional “present.”

Major Methods

  • Radiocarbon dating: Developed by Willard Libby; measures the decay of carbon-14 in organic materials such as charcoal, wood, bone and seeds. It is useful up to about 50,000 years.
  • Potassium–Argon/Argon–Argon dating: Dates volcanic rocks and ash associated with early hominin fossils and tools, especially those several hundred thousand or millions of years old.
  • Thermoluminescence: Measures trapped energy released when pottery, burnt stone or minerals are reheated; it dates their last heating.
  • Optically Stimulated Luminescence: Determines when sediment grains were last exposed to sunlight and is useful for buried archaeological layers.
  • Uranium-series and ESR: Applied to cave deposits, corals, bones, teeth and shells.
  • Dendrochronology: Matches annual tree-ring patterns and may provide calendar-year dates.

Significance

Chronometric dating helps anthropologists establish:

  • the antiquity of fossils, tools and settlements;
  • sequences of biological and cultural evolution;
  • the timing of migration, technological change and domestication;
  • comparisons between archaeological cultures of different regions.

Limitations

Accuracy may be affected by contamination, disturbed layers, unsuitable samples and incorrect association between the dated material and archaeological object. Each method also has a limited age range and suitable material.

Conclusion

Chronometric dating transformed archaeology into a time-based science. However, reliable chronology requires combining numerical dates with stratigraphy, typology and, where possible, more than one dating method.
