Introduction
Human growth and development include increase in body size, differentiation and maturation from conception to adulthood. Anthropology treats growth as canalised but plastic: inherited potential is expressed through endocrine, nutritional, ecological and social conditions.
Body
Genetic and constitutional factors: Stature, body proportions and tempo of maturation are polygenic. Sex differences become marked at puberty, while genetic disorders and chromosomal abnormalities may alter growth trajectories. Yet genes specify reaction ranges, not predetermined adult outcomes.
Prenatal environment: Maternal nutrition, placental function, disease, smoking, endocrine status and uterine conditions influence fetal growth and birth weight. Adverse prenatal environments may have long-term effects on metabolism and later health.
Endocrine regulation: Growth hormone–IGF-1, thyroid hormones and insulin support somatic growth; sex steroids produce the adolescent growth spurt and sexual maturation; glucocorticoid excess can retard growth.
Nutrition and disease: Protein-energy deficiency and deficits of iron, iodine, zinc or vitamin D impair growth. Recurrent infection produces a nutrition–infection cycle by reducing intake and absorption while increasing metabolic demand. Improvement can permit catch-up growth, especially when deprivation is temporary.

Franz Boas’s immigrant studies demonstrated developmental plasticity, challenging rigid hereditarian interpretations. J.M. Tanner’s Growth at Adolescence and Eveleth and Tanner’s Worldwide Variation in Human Growth established the importance of growth tempo and population comparison. Growth itself is non-linear. Infancy is rapid, childhood steadier, and adolescence produces a sex-differentiated growth spurt; skeletal, dental and sexual maturation need not proceed at identical rates. Hence chronological age alone is an imperfect index of biological maturity. Anthropologists use stature, weight, body proportions, skinfolds and growth velocity together with dental and skeletal age or pubertal staging. Cross-sectional studies efficiently compare age groups, whereas longitudinal studies reveal individual velocity and timing. This distinction matters because two children of the same height may be at different maturational stages.
Conclusion
Accordingly, growth must be assessed through longitudinal or cross-sectional anthropometry, maturation indicators and appropriate references such as WHO standards. Human growth is therefore a sensitive biocultural record of genotype × environment interaction across the life course.
