Introduction: Human populations survive diverse environments through several forms of adjustment. Adaptation, adaptability and acclimatization are related but distinct concepts differing in their time scale, heritability and mechanism.

  1. Adaptation

Adaptation refers to a relatively stable, heritable biological characteristic that increases survival or reproductive fitness in a particular environment and develops through natural selection across generations.

Thus:

Environmental pressure → Differential fitness → Natural selection → Genetic adaptation

Characteristics:

  • population-level phenomenon;
  • develops over generations;
  • has a genetic basis;
  • relatively persistent;
  • increases fitness in a particular ecological setting.

Example: High-altitude adaptation among Tibetans

Long-resident Tibetan populations show genetic adaptations associated with hypoxia, including variants near EPAS1, which contribute to effective oxygen utilization without excessively high haemoglobin levels.

Another example is persistence of the HbS allele in malaria-endemic populations through heterozygote advantage.

  1. Adaptability

Adaptability is the broader capacity of humans to adjust successfully to changing or diverse environmental conditions.

It includes not only genetic evolution but also:

  • physiological flexibility;
  • developmental plasticity;
  • behavioural adjustment;
  • technological innovation;
  • cultural adaptation.

Hence:

Adaptability = Capacity for multiple forms of adjustment

Humans possess exceptional adaptability because they can respond to environmental stress through both biology and culture.

For example, humans occupy Arctic environments through:

  • physiological cold responses;
  • insulated clothing;
  • shelters;
  • fire;
  • high-energy diets.

Thus:

  1. Acclimatization

Acclimatization refers to physiological adjustments occurring within the lifetime of an individual in response to naturally occurring environmental stress.

For example, when a lowland individual moves to high altitude:
