Introduction

The emergence of anatomically modern Homo sapiens and its dispersal has been explained mainly through the Recent African Origin, Multiregional Evolution and Assimilation models. Contemporary fossil and genomic evidence strongly favours an African origin, though with limited admixture with archaic populations.

Recent African Origin Model

Associated particularly with Chris Stringer and Peter Andrews, this model proposes that modern Homo sapiens evolved in Africa and later dispersed into Eurasia, substantially replacing archaic populations.

Evidence:

  1. African fossil record: Early anatomically modern humans are represented by:
    • Jebel Irhoud, Morocco
    • Omo Kibish, Ethiopia
    • Herto, Ethiopia
  2. Genetic diversity: African populations show the greatest human genetic diversity, indicating deeper population history.
  3. mtDNA evidence: Mitochondrial studies trace the deepest maternal lineages to Africa.
  4. Y-chromosome evidence: Paternal lineages also support deep African ancestry.

African origin → Out-of-Africa dispersal → Global expansion

Multiregional Evolution Model

Associated with Milford Wolpoff, Alan Thorne and others, this model argues that after early Homo dispersed from Africa, regional populations evolved toward modern humans while maintaining sufficient gene flow to remain one species.

Its major propositions were:

  • regional continuity;
  • gradual local evolution;
  • continuous gene flow;
  • no complete population replacement.

Supporters cited apparent morphological continuity in parts of East Asia and Australasia.

Criticism of Multiregionalism

The strict form is weakened by:

  • earliest modern-human fossils being African;
  • greatest genetic diversity occurring in Africa;
  • non-African populations carrying only a subset of African variation;
  • strong evidence for a relatively recent major dispersal out of Africa.

Thus, independent regional evolution into modern humans is not well supported.

Assimilation Model

The Assimilation model combines African origin with limited interbreeding:

African modern humans + Dispersal + Archaic admixture

This position receives strong support from genomics.

Neanderthal admixture

Genome sequencing shows that present-day non-African populations carry a small proportion of Neanderthal ancestry, proving that replacement was not complete.

Denisovan admixture

Denisovan DNA occurs especially among some populations of Melanesia, Oceania and Asia, indicating further interbreeding between modern humans and archaic hominins.

Nature of dispersal

Human dispersal was not a single event. It involved:

  • multiple movements within and outside Africa;
  • coastal and inland routes;
  • population expansions and contractions;
  • interaction with Neanderthals and Denisovans.
