Introduction

Primate locomotion reflects adaptation to body size, limb proportions, substrate and ecological niche. Non-human primates exhibit diverse locomotor patterns ranging from arboreal quadrupedalism and leaping to brachiation and knuckle-walking.

  1. Arboreal quadrupedalism

Movement occurs on all four limbs along branches.

Examples:

  • squirrel monkeys;
  • capuchins;
  • many guenons.

Characteristics include:

  • relatively similar fore- and hind-limb lengths;
  • grasping hands and feet;
  • balance adaptations, often including a long tail.
  1. Terrestrial quadrupedalism

Primates move primarily on four limbs on the ground.

Examples:

  • baboons;
  • patas monkeys.

Adaptations include relatively strong limbs and greater stability for movement on terrestrial surfaces.

  1. Vertical clinging and leaping

The animal clings vertically to a trunk and propels itself between supports using powerful hind limbs.

Examples:

  • tarsiers;
  • indris;
  • sifakas.

Typical adaptations include:

  • elongated hind limbs;
  • long tarsal elements;
  • powerful thigh musculature.

  1. Brachiation

Brachiation involves swinging beneath branches using alternate forelimbs.

Typical example: Gibbons

Adaptations include:

  • extremely long arms;
  • mobile shoulder joints;
  • broad thorax;
  • reduced lumbar region;
  • hook-like hands.

It is an efficient form of rapid suspensory locomotion.

  1. Suspensory climbing

Some primates distribute their body weight beneath branches and combine climbing with suspension.

Example: Orangutans

They employ slow, deliberate quadrumanous climbing, using both hands and feet to grasp supports.

  1. Knuckle-walking

African great apes support the forelimbs on the dorsal surfaces of the middle phalanges.

Examples:

  • chimpanzees;
  • gorillas.

This allows terrestrial movement while retaining long forelimbs suited to climbing.

  1. Slow climbing

Lorises move slowly and deliberately through the canopy, maintaining strong grasp and multiple points of contact.

Their locomotion is associated with:

  • powerful grasp;
  • controlled movement;
  • avoidance of rapid leaps.
  1. Facultative bipedalism

Chimpanzees, bonobos and some other primates can walk bipedally for short distances, especially while:

  • carrying objects;
  • feeding;
  • displaying.

However, unlike humans, habitual terrestrial bipedalism is not their principal locomotor mode.
