Introduction

Human evolution is a biocultural process in which biological and cultural changes continuously influence one another. Biological evolution operates through mutation, inheritance and natural selection, whereas cultural evolution involves the socially learned transmission of tools, language, beliefs and behaviour.

Clifford Geertz argued that culture was not added after the human body and brain had evolved; rather, biological and cultural evolution proceeded together. This reciprocal process is termed gene–culture coevolution.

Biological Foundations of Culture

Bipedalism and manual ability

Habitual bipedalism freed the hands for carrying food and infants and later facilitated tool use. Precision grip, hand–eye coordination and cerebral control made increasingly sophisticated technology possible. However, bipedalism emerged before regular stone-tool traditions and cannot be explained solely by tool use.

Brain enlargement and prolonged childhood

Expansion and reorganisation of the brain increased planning, memory, symbolic thought and social learning. At the same time, a prolonged childhood created greater dependence on parental care, teaching and cooperative social groups. Thus, biological immaturity increased cultural dependence.

Language capacity

Changes in the brain, vocal tract and respiratory control supported language. Language, in turn, allowed cooperation, teaching and accumulation of knowledge across generations, producing cumulative culture.

Culture as a Biological Selective Force

Tools, diet and cognitive development

Stone tools improved the processing of meat, marrow and plant foods. Their manufacture required planning, imitation and manual coordination. Cognitive ability and technological complexity may therefore have reinforced each other.

Fire and cooking

Cooking increased food digestibility and reduced chewing effort. Richard Wrangham related cooking to reduced jaws and teeth, while Aiello and Wheeler’s expensive-tissue hypothesis connected a higher-quality diet with reduced digestive costs and increased energy availability for the brain. However, neither cooking nor diet alone explains encephalisation.

Dairying and lactase persistence

Pastoralism created selection for adult lactose digestion. Lactase-persistence mutations increased independently among some European and African pastoral populations:

Dairying → regular milk consumption → selection for lactase persistence.

Agriculture, malaria and sickle-cell trait

Frank Livingstone showed that forest clearance and settled agriculture in West Africa increased mosquito-breeding habitats. Greater malaria exposure favoured heterozygous carriers of the sickle-cell allele, demonstrating how cultural modification of ecology alters gene frequencies.

Agriculture, settlement and disease

Permanent settlements increased population density, fertility and contact with domesticated animals. This produced new pressures from infectious diseases and altered nutrition, growth and demographic patterns.

Clothing and shelter

Fire, clothing and housing enabled humans to inhabit cold environments without waiting for extensive anatomical adaptation. Culture thus functions as a biological buffer and expands the human ecological niche.

Theoretical Explanation

Cavalli-Sforza and Feldman’s Cultural Transmission and Evolution (1981), and Boyd and Richerson’s Culture and the Evolutionary Process (1985), describe genes and culture as interacting systems of inheritance.

Niche-construction theory further explains that humans alter environments through technology, agriculture and domestication; these modified environments then create new biological selection pressures.

Critical Evaluation

The interaction should not be treated as a simple progressive cycle:

  • key changes such as bipedalism cannot be attributed to culture alone;
  • cultural innovations spread faster than genetic adaptations;
  • not every cultural practice produces biological change;
  • the same practice may have different effects in different populations;
  • biological constraints, including childbirth and energetic requirements, continue despite cultural advances;
  • medicine and technology may relax selection, while modern lifestyles create evolutionary mismatches such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, both biological determinism and cultural determinism are inadequate.

Conclusion

Human evolution resulted from continuous interaction among genes, culture and environment. Biology provided the capacities for tools, language and cooperation, while culture transformed diet, disease, reproduction and habitat, thereby reshaping biological evolution. Humans are consequently not merely adapted to environments; they actively construct the biocultural environments in which further evolution occurs.
