Introduction: A somatotype is a quantitative description of an individual's physique in terms of relative expression of endomorphy, mesomorphy and ectomorphy. While W.H. Sheldon originally developed a photographic method, Barbara Heath and J.E.L. Carter refined it into an objective anthropometric somatotyping method based on body measurements.
A somatotype is expressed as three numbers, for example:
3–5–2
where:
- first number = Endomorphy
- second = Mesomorphy
- third = Ectomorphy
The three components
- Endomorphy
Represents relative adiposity or fatness.
A high endomorphic score indicates:
- greater subcutaneous fat;
- rounded body contours;
- greater relative fat accumulation.
- Mesomorphy
Represents relative musculoskeletal robustness.
A high mesomorphic score indicates:
- greater muscle development;
- larger bone breadths;
- greater muscular girths.
- Ectomorphy
Represents relative linearity or slenderness.
A high ectomorphic score indicates:
- long, slender body;
- low body mass relative to stature.
Thus:
Endomorphy = Fatness
Mesomorphy = Musculoskeletal development
Ectomorphy = Linearity
Heath-Carter Anthropometric Method
The method requires standardized measurements of:
- stature;
- body weight;
- triceps skinfold;
- subscapular skinfold;
- supraspinale skinfold;
- medial calf skinfold;
- biepicondylar breadth of humerus;
- biepicondylar breadth of femur;
- flexed upper-arm girth;
- maximum calf girth.
- Calculation of Endomorphy
Endomorphy is derived principally from the sum of three skinfolds:
Triceps + Subscapular + Supraspinale
The sum is corrected for stature.
Let:
X = Sum of 3 skinfolds × (170.18 / Height in cm)
Then endomorphy is calculated through the Heath-Carter polynomial:
Endomorphy = −0.7182 + 0.1451X − 0.00068X² + 0.0000014X³
Hence greater skinfold thickness produces a higher endomorphic rating.
- Calculation of Mesomorphy
Mesomorphy is estimated from:
- humerus breadth;
- femur breadth;
- corrected arm girth;
- corrected calf girth;
- stature.
Corrected girths subtract the contribution of subcutaneous fat.
For example:
Corrected arm girth = Arm girth − (Triceps skinfold / 10)
Similarly:
Corrected calf girth = Calf girth − (Calf skinfold / 10)
The standard equation is:
Mesomorphy = 0.858(Humerus breadth) + 0.601(Femur breadth) + 0.188(Corrected arm girth) + 0.161(Corrected calf girth) − 0.131(Height) + 4.5
Higher bone breadths and muscular girths increase mesomorphy.
III. Calculation of Ectomorphy
Ectomorphy is calculated using the Height-Weight Ratio (HWR):
HWR = Height in cm / ∛Weight in kg
Depending upon the HWR, different formulae are applied.
For higher HWR values:
Ectomorphy = 0.732(HWR) − 28.58
Thus:
Greater stature relative to body mass → Greater ectomorphy
Very low HWR values receive minimal ectomorphic scores.
Somatotype representation
After calculation, the three components are written in order:
Endomorphy – Mesomorphy – Ectomorphy
Examples:
- 6–2–1 → Endomorphic physique
- 2–6–2 → Mesomorphic physique
- 1–2–6 → Ectomorphic physique
- 3–4–3 → Relatively balanced physique
The result may also be plotted on a somatochart to compare individuals or populations.
