A secular trend in growth refers to long-term intergenerational changes in body size, maturation and developmental tempo observed in a population over several decades. Such trends are not primarily genetic changes; they largely reflect alterations in nutrition, disease environment, socioeconomic conditions and lifestyle.
Major indicators
Secular trends are commonly observed through changes in:
- stature and body weight;
- age at menarche;
- age at peak height velocity;
- skeletal and dental maturation;
- body proportions and BMI.
Depending upon environmental change, the trend may be positive, negative or neutral.
Positive secular trend
A positive trend occurs when successive generations show:
- greater average height and weight;
- faster growth;
- earlier biological maturation.
Examples:
- European populations: During much of the twentieth century, average adult stature increased markedly in several European countries following improvements in nutrition, sanitation and healthcare.
- Age at menarche: In many industrialized populations, average age at menarche declined from about 16–17 years historically to around 12–13 years, reflecting improved childhood nutrition and health.
- Post-war Japan: Considerable increases in stature were recorded after World War II alongside improvements in diet, living standards and healthcare.
The mechanism may be represented as:

Negative secular trend
A negative trend refers to deterioration in growth or delayed maturation across generations.
It may occur because of:
- famine;
- prolonged economic crisis;
- war;

Examples: Populations exposed to sustained deprivation or conflict may show reductions in average stature, body mass or delayed maturation compared with preceding generations.
Historical skeletal populations also demonstrate episodes where increasing social inequality or nutritional stress accompanied reductions in average body size.
Neutral secular trend
A neutral trend occurs when little or no intergenerational change is observed.
This may arise when:
- living conditions remain relatively stable; or
- a population has approached its biological growth potential, producing a plateau.
In several affluent populations, increases in stature have slowed or stabilized after decades of improvement.
Thus:

Factors influencing secular trends
